How wide do stairs need to be for a stairlift?
Many stairlifts fit staircases from about 610mm wide at the narrowest point, depending on the model. Slimline and perch models suit tighter stairs, so measure carefully and ask for a survey.
Can you fit a stairlift on curved stairs?
Yes. A curved stairlift runs on a rail made to measure for your staircase, so it can follow bends, landings and spiral stairs. It costs more and takes longer to install than a straight stairlift.
What if the user can't bend their knees?
A perch or standing stairlift lets the user lean against a small seat instead of sitting fully. It suits people with stiff knees or hips, and staircases too narrow for a standard seat.
Can stairlifts be fitted outdoors?
Yes. Outdoor stairlifts have weatherproof covers and sealed parts for garden steps and exterior stairs. They usually cost a little more than the indoor equivalent.
