A stairlift company supplies, installs and services a powered seat that runs on a rail fixed to your stairs, so someone can travel between floors without climbing. Most UK stairlift companies fall into one of three groups.
Manufacturers design and build their own stairlifts. Acorn, Stannah, Handicare and Access BDD all make their own models. Some sell direct to you, and others work through approved dealers.
Dealers and installers sell and fit lifts made by one or more manufacturers. They often offer reconditioned stairlifts, rental and local servicing. Halton Stairlifts is an example.
Reconditioned specialists refurbish used lifts and refit them with a new warranty. This is mostly an option for straight staircases, because curved rails are made to measure for one staircase.
A stairlift company is not the same as a through-floor lift or home lift company. Those install a small lift that travels through the ceiling and suits wheelchair users. It also isn't a platform lift company, which fits lifts for wheelchairs on short rises. If the user can't transfer safely to a seat, ask an occupational therapist which option suits them.
