Can Chichester District Council Fund a Stairlift?

Chichester District Council lists stairlifts among the adaptations that may be funded. Stairlifts may qualify where the council considers the adaptation necessary and appropriate.

Examples the council gives:

• Improved access to the property
• Level-access showers / wet rooms
• Additional bedroom/bathroom space where appropriate
• Heating / lighting control adaptations

Owners and tenants can apply. The disabled person should intend to live in the property for at least five years (or a shorter period based on health circumstances).

How Much Could You Get?

The statutory maximum for a DFG in England is £30,000. This is a maximum, not a guaranteed award — the amount depends on the applicant's circumstances.

Chichester states that the amount depends on household income and savings over £6,000, subject to relevant exemptions. If you are not on a means-tested benefit, the council asks for a means test questionnaire, and you may be asked to contribute.

What Happens After the Assessment?

GOV.UK states that a council must give a decision within six months after receiving a valid application.
